We hand-make three types of compost at our farm in Uxbridge, Ontario: Thermal Aerobic (Soil Food Web School method), Johnson-Su compost (aged 12-18mo), and vermicompost (red wigglers); and then mix them together to achieve the greatest microbial diversity.

Microbial diversity and abundance is nurtured every step of the way - from sourcing clean and diverse feedstocks to maintaining moisture around 35% and storing in the shade, to packaging in breathable bags.

Our composts are periodically checked under the microscope to ensure the presence and abundance of fungi, protists, nematodes, and bacteria. Microbial reports are available. We will not sell a compost if it doesn't meet Dr. Elaine Ingham's microbial minimums for BioComplete Compost.

Due to the extremely high microbial counts, we recommend using this compost to make liquid biological amendments to inoculate other composts or soil.

  • For use in compost extract: Small (1L) is good for 15L of compost extract, which treats ~1000msq
  • For use in compost tea: When making a compost tea using our 5gal brew kit, 250mL is needed per 15L brew of compost tea.

  • Our composts are selected using the principles of Dr. Elaine Ingham's requirements for BioComplete(TM) Compost. While the term "BioComplete" is trademarked and a licence is required for its use, we use the term "biologically complete compost" to destinguish these requirements:

    1. The complete soil food web is present in 1-2 drops of sample at a 1:10 dilution with water. (Bacteria, fungi, protists and beneficial nematodes).

    2. Compost moisture is ~40% at time of shipping to maintain activity of microbes, so they are ready to reproduce in the compost tea and go to work in your soil

    3. Compost feedstock is "clean" - great care is taken to remove plastics and avoid chemical residues.

    4. Compost is "safe", containing no significant degree of pests or pathogens. This is done by either using thermal aerobic techniques of vermicomposting techniques, both of which provide an environment for aerobic microbes and deter anaerobic microbes.

    5. Microscope checks, microbial reports, and occasional chemistry and DNA analysis are run on each compost blend. Results available periodically, upon request.
